Stop doing everything everywhere all at once

Writing is hard because we weren’t taught how to write. Instead, we were taught how to edit: how to spell, punctuate and use the right grammar.
As a result, we try to do three things at once:
- Think of what to write.
- Write it down.
- Get it right.
And when you try to do everything at once, you don’t do anything very well. Instead, break your writing into three steps, and take a break between each step.
- Think of what to write. Do your research. Come up with your story angle. Organize your piece.
- Write it down. After sifting through and analyzing your material, you’ll find that the back of your mind has already written most of your message. Your fingers will have trouble keeping up with the paragraphs pouring out of your head. Experts call this state flow.
- Get it right. Now you go through and fix the spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Follow these steps in this order, and you’ll soon be writing Better, Easier and Faster.
